Ethan Hunt may have bit off more than he can chew

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE -- THE FINAL RECKONING (2025). Director: Christopher McQuarrie.

The sequel to Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning has Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) dealing with a malicious entity that has taken over the Internet and is well on the way to taking over the world. They need to find the original source code and a special key to destroy the entity, but killing it may also destroy cyberspace -- therefore the cabinet isn't crazy about Hunt's idea, although the president (Angela Bassett) eventually agrees. In the meantime Hunt and his team fly to various locations, deal with enemy agents in the employ of villain Gabriel (Esai Morales), and manage to wiggle their way out of assorted death traps, including a tense sequence on a submarine. Everyone winds up in an underground repository that is known as the Doomsday Chamber.

While not quite as good as Part One -- the whole thing is almost exhausting and one has to take it all with a large grain of salt -- Final Reckoning is nevertheless exciting and entertaining, with the entire cast giving it their all. The stunt work is, as usual, excellent. I have often said that these MI movies remind me in many ways of old cliffhanger serials, and like those old flicks, Dead Reckoning may have you scratching your head in disbelief in certain sequences (such as Hunt being somehow gotten through yards of solid ice, but no matter.) Bassett and Morales and Tramell Tillman as sub captain Bledsoe give particular arresting performances.

Verdict: Typically absurd but fun. ***.

The Crimson Ghost, as he calls himself, is one of the members of a scientific committee and is employed by a foreign government. The Ghost is after a "cyclotrode," a device which can "instantly stop any electrically-controlled mechanism," which he uses more than once. His nasty helpmates include Ashe (Clayton Moore of G-Men Never Forget) and Bain (Rex Lease), and the Ghost also employs special collars that sap the will of victims, force them to commit criminal acts, and can even kill them from afar. Aiming to stop him are Duncan Richards (Charles Quigley of The Iron Claw) and his efficient assistant, Diana (Linda Stirling of The Purple Monster Strikes).

The Crimson Ghost is a whirlwind Republic serial with a generally good musical score and reasonably adept performances. The true identity of the Ghost is kept secret until practically the final minute of the serial. There are some decent cliffhangers -- a room fills with poisoned gas; a rope is cut, causing Duncan to fall towards the street below; a car smashes into the wall of a boathouse etc. -- although virtually all of them are "cheats," with the characters always jumping out of the way in the last second. However, this doesn't matter as the furious fisticuffs, the extreme nastiness of the villain, and the sheer fun of the serial makes it a winner. As usual, the color adds a new, welcome dimension. 

Verdict: Can't keep that Ghost down! ***.

FBI agent Jerry Cotton (George Nader) is enjoying a drink when he tries to help a man, Thomas (Christian Doermer), who is dragged out of the club by thugs. Thomas is one of several men who is participating, perhaps unwillingly in his case, in a plot to rob the U.S. Treasury. Thomas' friend Phyllis (Yvonne Monlaur) is kidnapped by the gang when it is suspected that she knows more about his activities than she really does. Jerry affects a rescue of her, and tries to warn Clark (Walter Rilla), head of the Treasury, about the upcoming robbery, but he doesn't listen, and the mint is robbed of millions. Now it's up to Jerry to round up the gang and get the moolah back!

This is another entertaining West German Jerry Cotton movie with Nader essaying the role in his usual slick and heroic style. At one point Jerry launches himself off a high rooftop and miraculously grabs hold of the bottom rungs of a helicopter taking off. (The process work in this exciting sequence is very well done.) Heinz Weiss appears as Jerry's partner, Phil Decker, but he doesn't get much to do in this entry. There's an interesting development when Jerry takes the blame for letting the robbery occur to spare Clark, who blames himself and is on the verge of suicide. Jerry winds up being suspended but, true to form, stays in action. 

Verdict: Handsome Nader does the derring-do with flair. **3/4.
